What is the reference week?
The fixed reference period is : the initial seven source-calendar dates beginning with Grand Launch on October 21. This project chose that dated opening period as a reproducible starting point. These are calendar-day aggregates, not seven full 24-hour intervals from an exact opening hour; 18:00 UTC is the separately announced Founder’s Access time, not an established Grand Launch time.
For MPI and Cash Basket, 100 represents the basket at its reference prices; individual days in that week need not equal 100. NX percentage change compares with its frozen reference-week rate. The versioned baseline stays fixed: there is no arbitrary week chooser that could silently rebase or drift it. The 48h, 7d and Founders controls change chart views only. The pricing table’s source-calendar lookback changes its cash-item estimates only; it changes neither the baseline nor the headline.
Each category dial uses that category’s reference-price mix on those same dates, rather than the whole 50-item basket. Its arc fills from 0 to the needle on a shared scale. Category average weight is total category basket weight divided by its item count; individual item weights can differ.
A basket based on spending why 50?
Basket v2 freezes the 50 eligible items outside the source’s Cash Shop category with the largest estimated meso turnover in : daily median price × recorded sold volume. Eligibility requires at least five reference days with recorded volume of 50 or more. For eligible items, all reference days with at least five recorded sales enter the base calculations. These counts do not establish stack quantities or independent traders.
Source-category scope. Only the source’s Cash Shop category is excluded; funding origin and the client cash flag are not independently screened. Mystery Palette Exchange Coupon (2430045), source-classified Use/Consumables, has 2.01% frozen basket weight and is listed for 5 Aurora Stamps in Nexon’s official stamp shop. Reviewed MCW v1 metadata reports isCash: false for this coupon. That client field does not determine paid acquisition or index eligibility, and the stamp-shop connection establishes no fixed direct NX cost. Client item metadata ↗ It is distinct from the excluded Cash Shop item Mystery Palette; the coupon’s membership and weight remain unchanged.
Base price is the sale-volume-weighted average of daily medians in that reference week. Base spending is that price multiplied by recorded base sale volume. Weights are spending shares, capped at 8% with excess redistributed until all weights sum to 100%. Thus a cheap ore with many sales and an expensive scroll with fewer sales both contribute in proportion to estimated mesos spent. The cap applies to base weights; a large later price change can still have a larger effect.
This v2 history is reconstructed using a fixed basket selected later. It is separate from the earlier count-selected v1 series, whose definition and published values remain archived. An index change caused by switching definitions is not a new market move.
MPIₜ = 100 × Σ wᵢ × (priceᵢ,ₜ / base priceᵢ)wᵢ ∝ base priceᵢ × base sale volumeᵢ · max 8%
Daily medians × sold volume approximate turnover; they do not equal an exact transaction-value sum. The source does not expose the underlying stack-level trades here. There is no claim to measure total meso supply. Clean and upgraded equipment can mix in aggregate medians, introducing quality/composition bias.
Launch context on charts
Nexon announced Founder’s Access for October 6, 2026 at 11 AM PDT (18:00 UTC), and Grand Launch for October 21, 2026. The Grand Launch time is not established here. Chart markers show these calendar days; daily aggregates retain their source-day boundaries and cannot identify prices before or after an intraday opening. Founders period means October 6–20 inclusive; Grand Launch onward begins October 21. All-time charts may extend the axis to October 6 when the first recorded point is October 7; no observation is added. Nexon launch announcements via Steam ↗
Can turnover reveal total meso circulation?
Turnover is a flow over a period; meso balances are a stock at a moment. The same coins can fund repeated purchases, while stored or inactive balances remain unseen. This feed does not measure money creation (faucets), destruction (sinks) or how often money changes hands (velocity). Consequently, these data identify neither total meso supply nor a defensible confidence interval. Estimating supply would require independent balance coverage and validated measurements or assumptions about those missing quantities; no numerical estimate is published.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics, UK Office for National Statistics and Statistics Canada weight consumer-price baskets by household spending. Keeping a reference mix stable helps distinguish price changes from changing purchases; agencies periodically refresh baskets and adjust for quality. Their detailed formulas differ: this project borrows the basket principle, not national CPI coverage. Sources: BLS, ONS, Statistics Canada.
Here, estimated meso turnover replaces household spending. This fixed 50-item basket measures selected game-market prices, not a player's cost of living. Liquidity screens, base-weight caps and dated coverage disclosures improve reproducibility, but cannot establish complete coverage or manipulation immunity. The goods basket excludes items classified Cash Shop by this source; it does not independently exclude every item with monetized origins. This source-category rule and the coupon exception above define its analytical scope. NX's percentage change uses cash-item ratios with changing daily volume weights; MPI uses fixed base-expenditure weights, so the two measure different things.
- Strength: a stable, inspectable basket makes price comparisons reproducible without silently changing what the index tracks.
- Limits: players substitute, gear quality varies, new items arrive, and supply unlocks move prices; incomplete coverage remains.
Why 50 items?
Fifty is this project’s initial, inspectable market basket size, not a U.S. CPI rule or a statistical guarantee. It focuses on regularly traded items with usable reference-week observations. The coverage below shows how much activity it captures; excluded items and changes in item quality can behave differently.
Membership stays fixed between explicit basket versions. I review broader coverage and category concentration separately; adding items would create a new version and preserve this history. Recorded sale counts are not independent-trader sample sizes, and a larger count alone does not establish accuracy.
Why was Steely left out of basket v2? Are throwing stars a separate category?
Steely Throwing Knives had prices during the fixed reference period (October 21–27, 2026), but only 25 reported sets in total and no day with recorded volume of at least 50. Basket eligibility requires at least five reference days meeting that liquidity threshold before ranking items by estimated meso turnover. Its exclusion is a reference-period liquidity decision; a high price alone cannot make an item eligible. These are the publisher’s recorded counts, not independently verified transactions or traders.
The source has a Stars category, available in Price Check. The five-category overview groups throwing stars under Weapons. Kumbi Throwing Stars, Mokbi Throwing Stars and Wooden Top are included in v2, with 9.84% combined base weight. Steely remains in the broader catalogue. Later basket versions can reflect stronger evidence and changes in the economy while preserving the old basket and its history; this FAQ describes the frozen v2 selection.
What counts as evidence?
Shop observations→Source-inferred sales→Daily medians + volume
These are scanner-derived sale estimates rather than user-entered asks. The source’s underlying scanner may infer a sale when a shop closes and an item is gone. A disappearing listing or a grey row is evidence with limitations; neither independently proves a trade. I do not classify an item as sold merely from its sprite color.
Using a fixed basket, sale-volume-weighted prices and capped spending shares makes a single posted quote less influential after this site is published. Smega asks and player reports never enter the MPI; these choices reduce manipulation risk, while coordinated trades, wash trading and scanner errors can still distort observed sales.
Asking prices, signed-in player reports, and smega advertisements are separate signals. They are labeled and plotted separately when observations are available. Missing series stay empty instead of inventing history.
I retain source observations with their own clocks, price bases and limitations, including evidence that cannot be matched to an index item. Henesys Store, Shumi and classicmarket.kr identify MapleStory Market as a market upstream, so their overlapping displays are not independent corroboration; I do not sum repeated records as extra trades without stable event IDs.
